However, I would like to be able to SHIFT drag a file onto the electron app icon on the Windows Taskbar when the app is running. When I do the SHIFT drag, the tooltip says 'Open with Electron', but when I then drop....nothing happens. I have tried console logging inside the "second-instance" handler, which is what I would expect to fire...but nothing.
As we exclusively reported last year, the company has been internally mulling support for this functionality for nearly six months now. With Windows 11 Build 22557, Microsoft has finally enabled drag and drop support for the taskbar, allowing users to drag and drop files between app windows.
Open a file by drag-and-dropping it onto a Windows Taskbar icon
Starting with Windows 11 Build 22557, it is now possible to drag and drop files like images or texts between app windows. To get started, simply select and hold a file pinned to the desktop or File Explorer and drag it towards one of the open apps in the taskbar by hovering over icons.
This will bring their windows to the foreground and apps can copy the content dragged by you. For example, you can drag an image from the desktop and drop it in the Outlook attachment screen by hovering over the Outlook icon in the taskbar.

Here's how to enable file drag-n-drop on taskbar in Windows 11 to open files in running apps. Unfortunately, this useful feature wasn't added to Windows 11. It doesn't allow you to drag documents on the taskbar buttons of apps.
One of the new features of Windows 11 is the taskbar. It displays the Start menu button and running apps aligned to the center. Also, the tray icon area works quite different. For example, network, sound, and battery icons are one huge button, which opens Quick Settings when you click it.
Another regression is that taskbar doesn't allow dragging files to the running app buttons. Earlier, you could find the needed file in File Explorer and quickly drag to a button in the taskbar. The target app would open on the screen with the dragged document open once you release the left mouse button. This no longer a thing. I frequently need to process a bunch of files with a batch script. The way I usually do this is by selecting the files in the explorer and then drag-and-dropping them onto a shortcut to the script (the target of that shortcut is cmd /C C:\path\to\my\script.bat).

When working on a specific task, snap two or more open apps or windows to create a snap group. When you want to get back to the snap group later, hover over one of your open apps in the taskbar to find it.
The Recent list will automatically show any saved file that you opened with Outlook 2003 or Outlook 2007. You can then easily re-open any of the listed files by right clicking on the Outlook icon and select that file.
The settings window.openFoldersInNewWindow and window.openFilesInNewWindow are provided to configure opening new windows or reusing the last active window for files or folders and possible values are default, on and off.
Drag and Drop have been fundamental Windows functionality that we have been using for years. The feature is a bit broken on Windows 11 and Microsoft has acknowledged fixing it, but we are not sure when they will do that. It is not that dragging and dropping files across apps does not work, instead just that we cannot make use of the taskbar to switch apps/windows for dropping. I have two desktops open in Windows 11. In one desktop, I have an excel workbook open. What I want to do is open a separate excel workbook in the other desktop. If I click on the icon on the second desktop (I do not have an icon in the taskbar on the second desktop), it takes me to the first desktop. My goal is to have one workbook open in the first desktop and a different one open in the second desktop.
It was possible in Windows 10 to drag and drop a file on apps icons in Taskbar to open them in the app. Windows 11 removed this feature but users wanted this feature back and it was again one of the most requested feature to be added back to Windows 11. The problem comes to this: one software is run as administrator and the other is not. At least that is the explanation that I have found on the Internet to this apparently common problem with various pieces of software; and which explenation is confirmed by my tests On my system I have one User and that User is the administrator. I have Mp3tag pinned down to the Windows Taskbar. The Mp3tag icon on Taskbar has 2 playlists pinned to it. And by default it works like this: if I want to open Mp3tag I can either left click the main icon on the Taskbar or right click the very same icon to unfold the short menu- and then left click one of the two playlists or the additional icon for the Mp3tag EXE itself. So after that, in either case, if I have files in the main window of Mp3tag and want to select them and drag them to my audio editor I can do that only in theory- because in reality nothing will happen [except for an occasional show up of the hour glass for a split second]. Also if I execute the simple File > Options > Tools entry
and select the box for that. So now what happens? If I left click the icon on the Taskbar [or right click it and the left click the sub-icon] Mp3tag will open- and I can drag files to my editor from it. And I can also execute my File > Options > Tools shortcut. So, the problem is solved? Well, not exactly Because if now I will right click the icon on the Taskbar to see the menu and left click a playlist from it- nothing will happen. So now the task of loading of the playlist is ignored. And there is no
B] If I want to play files from Mp3tag in my Winamp, I can double left click a single file in the main window or select in the main windows multiple files and use the Play option from the right click menu- and then have to wait for about 20 seconds before Winamp will finally start to play the loaded data. And what is also interesting, during this 20 seconds Mp3tag works half-way, e.g. I can execute an Action but then will have to wait for the Mp3tag Toolbar icons to regain their colors thus indicating that the options from the Toolbar are no longer blocked [by that sending process that last 20 seconds]. And what is more interesting, if in these new conditions [with Run as administrator applied directly to the EXE] I drag and drop the files to Winamp from Mp3tag, there are loaded into the playlist immediately The same thing [the "B]" that is] happens with FreeCommander file manager: I cannot drag and drop files from it unless FC is opened as administrator- and when it is, it takes 20 seconds for a file left-clicked in FreeCommander to be played in Winamp and during these 20 seconds FC blocks itself [but completely and not just kind of like inthe case of Mp3tag]. So I should also run Winamp as administrator- and the problem will be solved [because I will have an administrator combo consisting of tagging, file managing and audio playing software]?
